Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is holding talks to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab, according to reports.

De Gea has been a free agent since he was released by United last summer and is yet to find a new club in the January transfer window.

The 33-year-old had been linked with a switch to Newcastle United to provide cover following Nick Pope’s injury.

But De Gea’s best chance of returning to football now appears to be joining the Saudi Pro League as MailOnline reports that the Spaniard is now in negotiations with Al-Shabab.

The Saudi side, who have former Atletico Madrid winger Yannick Carrasco in their squad, currently sit 11th in the table and just four points above the relegation zone.

Speaking at the end of December, Newcastle United’s all-time record goalscorer, Alan Shearer, urged his former club to make a move for De Gea.

‘I would agree goalkeeper and centre forward would be the two main priorities for me,’ Shearer said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

‘But good luck trying to find a good centre forward that you can bring in for a decent amount of money.’

Asked if he would sign De Gea for Newcastle, Shearer replied: ‘Yeah, I would.

‘I think Newcastle need a goalkeeper, and De Gea is out there. I know the salary would be huge but they wouldn’t have to pay a fee for him.’
