Bayern Munich are interested in Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, with the teenager’s future at Old Trafford still in doubt.

The 19-year-old remains an important part of the Red Devils’ team after bursting onto the scene last season and the club want to keep hold of him.

The England international is under contract until 2027, but he wants a new deal on a vastly improved salary as he is currently paid £20,000-a-week.

Obviously that is a huge amount to the vast majority of people, but not if you play for Manchester United, as many of his teammates have wages which dwarf Mainoo’s.

The teenager reportedly wants an enormous hike to £200,000-a-week and, while Manchester United are happy to improve his wages, they do not want to go that high.

The Red Devils, while they do not want to lose Mainoo, could be tempted to cash in on him if the contract situation becomes a problem as he represents pure profit in an accounting sense under Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Manager Ruben Amorim is keen to rebuild his squad and needs funds to do so.

Chelsea have been credited with an interest in Mainoo and now Bayern Munich are said to be keen on the central midfielder, according to The Sun.

Amorim has regularly been picking Mainoo and clearly rates the England star, but has also warned the youngster that he has more work to do on his game.

‘Kobbie has been improving a lot over the last few matches,’ said the United boss. ‘But I think you guys feel like he is the finished product — he is not.

‘He is really good but can be so much better. He has so much potential to grow up even more.’

Amorim did point out that he is pleased with Mainoo and that he wants to keep his best players, of which the 19-year-old is one of.

‘Our idea is always to keep the best players and the players that we build for this club,’ Amorim told a press conference ahead of the FA Cup third-round win over Arsenal.

‘But we know the position that this club is in at this moment, we will see but I really like our players, especially from our academy. I’m really happy with Kobbie, he’s improving and also Garnacho.’
