Teddy Sheringham has rated Manchester United’s top-four chances and urged Erik ten Hag to cash in on £50m flop Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Red Devils climbed to fifth in the Premier League after Sunday’s narrow win over West Ham at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag endured a dismal start to his tenure as United manager, with the team losing on the opening day of the season to Brighton and then suffering an embarrassing defeat to Brentford.

But Manchester United have largely impressed since then and moved above Chelsea at the weekend, with the chance to break into the top-four if they win their game in hand.

Speaking on Sunday, Old Trafford legend Gary Neville claimed United have a ‘great chance’ of finishing in the top-four, above Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Asked about Neville’s comments, former Manchester United striker Sheringham told OLBG: ‘Erik ten Hag still has a massive job on his hands. Things go one way, then go another. That’s how it’s going to be until he lays down his foundation.

‘With that in mind, I don’t think United have a chance to win the league, but they have shown good signs recently, there was a bit of a struggle to get over the line against West Ham, but they did anyway. Top-four is a real chance for United.’

Sheringham also urged his former club to cash in on out-of-favour defender Wan-Bissaka, who has struggled at the Theatre of Dreams following his £50m move from Crystal Palace in 2019.

Wan-Bissaka is yet to start a game under Ten Hag – who has favoured Diogo Dalot in the right-back position – and has been linked with a return to Selhurst Park.

Sheringham added: ‘If Manchester United can get money for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, they should do a deal.

‘He’s fallen out of favour and has had a tough time coming into Manchester United in a tough period. It didn’t look like they worked on improving the back four and defensive unit since he’s been there.’

Meanwhile, Sheringham has reiterated his belief that Cristiano Ronaldo should have left Manchester United last summer, insisting it is ‘not ideal’ to have an ‘unhappy superstar’ in the squad.

Ronaldo has been reintegrated into the United squad after being axed by Ten Hag but continues to be linked with a move ahead of the January transfer window.

‘He should have moved on at the start of the season when he made it clear that he wanted to leave,’ Sheringham said. ‘It’s not ideal to have an unhappy superstar in your camp.

‘If Ronaldo is not 100% committed to the cause, it’s not good for the rest of the squad, no matter the player.’

Manchester United return to Europa League action on Thursday night against Real Sociedad, before travelling to the Midlands at the weekend to face Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.
