The bookmakers have slashed the odds on Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag becoming the first Premier League managerial casualty of the season.

The Dutchman’s reign in the red side of Manchester was plunged further into chaos on Tuesday night with a humiliating 3-2 defeat at home to Galatasaray in the Champions League.
United had led twice under the Old Trafford floodlights courtesy of a brace from summer signing Rasmus Hojlund, but their calamitous defending at the back saw the Turkish giants leave UK shores with all three points.
The result leaves the Red Devils with no points from their opening two Champions League games and a mammoth effort will now be required to ensure progression into the knockout stages after Christmas.
Their Premier League campaign hasn’t fared much better, either, with Ten Hag’s men losing four of their seven league games to date – with the latest a 1-0 home reversal to Crystal Palace last weekend.
In fact, United have recorded their worst start to a season since Sir Alex Ferguson replaced Ron Atkinson 37 years ago.
However, despite the outside turmoil, the United hierarchy reportedly retain faith in Ten Hag and have no plans to axe the 53 year-old.
There is sympathy towards the manager for the club’s injury list, which last month rose to as high as nine players in the treatment, whilst Ten Hag has had to deal with numerous off-field distractions.
But that hasn’t stopped fans lumping their money on Ten Hag to be shown the Old Trafford exit door, with the bookies slashing the odds in response.
Odds for Erik ten Hag to be the next Premier League manager sacked
Ten Hag is now the second favourite Premier League manager to be sacked next at 7/2.
Sheffield United’s Paul Heckingbottom is the favourite to depart at 4/5, with the Blades boss overseeing just one point from their opening seven games.
The Yorkshire side, who were beaten 8-0 by Newcastle last month, have already reportedly sounded out former manager Chris Wilder if Heckingbottom is given the axe.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has overseen a winless start to his Cherries career and the Spaniard rounds out the top three at 13/2.
Next Premier League manager to be sacked
- Paul Heckingbottom 4/5
- Erik ten Hag 7/2
- Andoni Iraola 13/2
- Sean Dyche 7/1
- Gary O’Neil 12/1
- Mauricio Pochettino 16/1
- Marco Silva 20/1
- Rob Edwards 20/1
- Vincent Kompany 20/1
- Steve Cooper 25/1

Who are the favourites to replace Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager?
Zinedine Zidane has been installed as the favorite to become the new Manchester United manager should Ten Hag’s reign come to an end at 4/1.
The French icon claimed three consecutive Champions League titles with Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018 and guided Los Blancos to the La Liga title in 2019/20, before leaving for a second time in 2021.
Zidane said last year that his poor English has made him cautious about accepting a job in the Premier League, but it remains to be seen if the former midfielder would be tempted to link up with one of the biggest clubs in the game.
Former Bayern Munich manger Julian Nagelsmann is second favourite at 5/1, but United may have to wait until next year to acquire his services with his native Germany having appointed him on a contract under the end of Euro 2024, which takes place on home soil.
United have been monitoring the 36 year-old as far back as his days at Leipzig and he was linked with the Chelsea and Tottenham posts last season.
Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has worked miracles at Brighton and his work on the south coast has seen the Seagulls transformed into one of the best ball-playing sides in Europe.
As such, the fiery Italian is third on the list at 15/2, but Brighton would surely be loathed to lose him mid-season as they embark on their first ever European campaign.
Manchester City have been widely tipped as Roberto De Zerbi’s next destination when Pep Guardiola eventually abdicates his throne, so United may be eager to nip in ahead of their arch-rivals.
Graham Potter is priced at 10/1, just ahead of former United midfielder and current Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick, who guided Boro into the Championship play-offs last season.
Next permanent Manchester United manager
- Zinedine Zidane 4/1
- Julian Nagelsmann 5/1
- Roberto De Zerbi 15/2
- Graham Potter 10/1
- Michael Carrick 12/1
- Antonio Conte 16/1
- Gareth Southgate 16/1
- Julen Lopetegui 16/1
- Mauricio Pochettino 20/1
- Diego Simeone 20/1
- Kieran McKenna 20/1
- Brendan Rodgers 25/1
- Thomas Frank 25/1
