Erik ten Hag was left unhappy with three Manchester United stars for their wastefulness at Luton Town and has explained why he made a double substitution at half-time.

The Red Devils were made to work for three points at Kenilworth Road on Sunday despite Rasmus Hojlund handing them a two-goal cushion after seven minutes.

Carlton Morris pulled one back for Luton and Rob Edwards’ side had several chances to snatch a point as United eventually held on for a valuable victory.

Speaking after the match, Ten Hag called out Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes for failing to covert ‘big chances’.

The Dutchman told Sky Sports: ‘It should be an easy game after 10 minutes, but in the end it was a difficult game.

‘With Garnacho and Rashford, we had big chances to make it 3-0 or 4-0. We dropped too deep and allowed them to get back in the game.

‘We didn’t close the half spaces. It got difficult. In the second half, we didn’t take our chances.

‘There were so many and they were big chances. We should have scored [more].

‘With Bruno, Garnacho and Rashford, they were not half-opportunities, they were 100 per cent chances.

‘One has to go in and then you make your life easy. But we kept them in the game.’

Quizzed about his decision to haul off Casemiro and Harry Maguire at the interval after their first-half bookings, Ten Hag added: ‘I saw the reaction from the referee and thought they could go off with the next one.

‘I wouldn’t take that risk. With Scott McTominay and Jonny Evans we have good replacements. Don’t take the risk. I thought it was the right decision.’
