Erik ten Hag sets out what Manchester United ‘have to do’ this season | Football

Erik ten Hag says the expectations at Manchester United are for his team to win every single game they play and that is what he aims to do as manager.

The Dutchman got off to the worst possible start as Red Devils boss last weekend, losing at home to Brighton in his first Premier League game in charge.

The 2-1 defeat was disappointing, but so was the lack of progress from last season, with United often looking as disjointed and fragile as they did under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick over the last campaign.

Ten Hag knows there is a huge amount of work to do, in the transfer market and on the training pitch, but is also aware that he has to pick up results while that work is being done.

In fact, he reckons that anything below winning every game they play is unacceptable at Old Trafford, so that is what he is striving to do.

‘We know the standards, we know the expectations, so we have to win every game. That is what we aim for,’ Ten Hag told the BBC.

‘We will prepare every game, 100 per cent, and we will see what comes out. See what happens, but we know what we have to do.’

Ten Hag will be put to the test again on Saturday evening when United travel to Brentford in the 5.30pm kick-off, with pressure already intense to get a good result.

There will be plenty of interest in the team the Dutchman picks, with Cristiano Ronaldo pushing for a return to the starting line-up as his desire to leave the club this summer seems less and less likely to come to pass.

The likes of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho struggled to make any impact against Brighton, while the midfield pair of Fred and Scott McTominay came in for a lot of criticism from club legends.

Anthony Martial missed the opening game of the season and it has not been made clear if he will be fit for the trip to face the Bees yet.
