The 20-year-old was presented to supporters at the Theatre of Dreams today after completing a £62million move to the Red Devils.
Ten Hag made signing a striker a priority following a debut campaign at the club where his side struggled in front of goal.
Marcus Rashford scored in a 3-1 friendly win against Lens on Saturday, with the winger playing through the middle.
Hojlund is currently injured and weeks away from match fitness.
But Ten Hag says Hojlund is a traditional centre forward that has ‘huge’ potential.
‘He is a real front man,’ said Ten Hag.
‘Very direct through the goal. Very good presser. Physical presence. In the balance of this squad, we needed that.
‘It’s all that’s in his [Hojlund] mind. He wants to score goals.’
‘I think he [Hojlund] has such a huge potential and now it’s up to him to exploit it and we will will support him. All the coaches and the team will.’
The likes of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes have bemoaned United’s charity in front of goal.
Ten Hag admits the team have been desperate to sign a centre forward and they’ve found one in Hojlund.
‘The team were hoping for a type like him [Hojlund]. But the player has to prove it,’ said the Dutchman.
‘We need hungry players and he [Hojlund] is a player who is so determined to score goals and win games and trophies.’
