Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag says Fred has been overlooked for today’s clash against Arsenal because Scott McTominay has a ‘special role’ to play.

With Casemiro missing through suspension, compatriot Fred was expected to start against table-topping Arsenal.

The Brazilian excelled against Manchester City last weekend and his energy is a valuable weapon against a team of Arsenal’s prowess.

However, Fred was named on the bench for the visit to the Emirates with Ten Hag picking McTominay instead.

McTominay and Christian Eriksen started the 3-1 victory against Arsenal in September, when Casemiro had just joined the club.

‘We think he [McTominay] can fill in very well,’ said Ten Hag ahead of kick-off.

‘We have a special role for him and I hope it will work, a little bit like last time.’

Wout Weghorst starts for the second time in United colours, with Anthony Martial absent from the squad through injury.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka once against starts at right-back as Diogo Dalot remains sidelined.
