Raphael Varane scored 15 minutes from time to give United a fortunate win on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
Wolves dominated at the Theatre of Dreams, and came close to opening the scoring on a number of occasions before Varane headed home the winner.
United needed Andre Onana to be at his best on his club debut as Wolves somehow failed to find the back of the net.
The home side had very few clear-cut chances as a front three of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony flattered to deceive but Ten Hag felt they had plenty of opportunities in attack to threaten Wolves’ goal.
And it was that failure to combine in the final-third that angered Ten Hag, who said his attack was well below-par.
‘It was a tough game. We can be much better on the ball,’ said Ten Hag.
‘Wolves were very aggressive. We could be better in decision-making. But I see many positive things, six, seven good high ball regains, we have to make more of them. In a low block we fought for our lives.
‘I think we could have scored from turnovers, there were overloads, the frontline was not in the best form today.
‘They could have made more out of it. Last week we scored some incredible goals, today we didn’t but it will come.’
While Onana impressed on his debut, it was a difficult first start for Mason Mount.
The midfielder was deployed in an advanced midfield role but struggled to get into the game or to influence proceedings.
Ten Hag, though, says the former Chelsea man put in a good display.
‘A good performance. He did what we expected him to do. He had a very good level in the game,’ said Ten Hag.
