Manchester City legend, Sergio Aguero, has said that he is happy for Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez for proving his doubters wrong.
Martinez reunited with Man United manager Erik ten Hag over the summer as the 24-year-old swapped Ajax for the Red Devils in a deal worth £50million.
While Martinez arrived at Old Trafford with a great reputation, there were plenty of pundits who believed the Argentina international would struggle in England, mainly because of his height.
Martinez is the shortest centre-back in the English Premier League at 5ft 9in and after this weakness was exposed in Man United’s humiliating 4-0 defeat to Brentford back in August, many were quick to label his transfer to Erik ten Hag’s side as a mistake.
However, since the Brentford game, Martinez has been in domineering form and has emerged as perhaps Man United’s best player so far this season, starting all but one of their matches so far.
“Lisandro Martinez has proved that size doesn’t matter and his doubters are now eating humble pie,” Aguero told Stake.
“Licha already at Ajax had shown that he’s a strong and brave player and that size doesn’t have as much influence. He was a figure in that team and for a reason, Ten Hag took him to United.
“I understand that some in England might have doubts, they didn’t know him. But he only needed a couple of games to show his quality and today not only is he not questioned, but it’s said that he’s vital in the defensive structure of his team.
“I am happy for him because he deserves it.”
