Former Liverpool star, Danny Murphy, has told Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, that he has made a mistake over his choice of player that will captain the club next season.

Ten Hag had earlier on Monday named Maguire as the player that will continue as Man United captain next season.

But Murphy believes the Manchester United captaincy is ‘too much’ for the England defender, adding that Ten Hag ‘made a mistake’ by not taking it away from him.

Speaking on Ten Hag’s decision to name Maguire as Man United’s captain for next season, Murphy told talkSPORT: “I think he’s probably made a mistake.

“I think it was time for a change of captaincy for United.”

When asked who should take the captaincy instead, Murphy replied: “To whoever he brings in that is big enough and brave enough to do it.

“I remember being at Liverpool when Incey [Paul Ince] walked in the door, and the mentality changed straight away.”

“That doesn’t mean I would want to get rid of him, I think he’s a good player.

“I just think it’s too much for him. I think he’s struggled with it a bit. I think his performance would be enhanced [without the captaincy].”
