Former Manchester United defender, Gary Neville has described Arsenal as a team without the character to be in the Premier League top four.

Nevile expressed disappointment at Mikel Arteta’s side after the Gunners suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on Monday.

The defeat put Tottenham in the driving seat to qualify for a Champions League place.

The loss at St James’ Park means Arsenal are two points behind their north London rivals, with one game remaining.

The Gunners host Everton on the final day and require Tottenham to lose against Norwich City on Sunday

“I gave them the benefit of the doubt at half-time,” Neville told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

“That is a young team that doesn’t have the experience or the character. I never fully trusted them to get into the top four, to be honest with you, all the way through.

“But I thought they would come out in the second half and respond. It tells us where they are at.”
