EPL: Alan Shearer, Ian Wright send message to Chelsea owner, Boehly over title

Newcastle United legend, Alan Shearer and Arsenal legend, Ian Wright, have sent a message to Chelsea co-owner, Todd Boehly, over the Blues’ chances of winning the Premier League title this season.

Shearer and Wright have played down Chelsea’s chances of winning the Premier League this term, claiming that the club, under the leadership of their new owner, Boehly, still need to ‘spend more’ and sign a new striker to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool.

Recall that Chelsea have already signed the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Raheem Sterling, Carney Chukwuemeka and Marc Cucurella this summer.

Chelsea, who finished third last season, kicked off their 2022-2023 campaign with a 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday at Goodison Park.

Asked to rate Chelsea’s title chances after their win at Everton, Wright told BBC’s Match of the Day: “I think they are going to have to [spend more], especially when you see what Man City are doing and how strong Liverpool are.

“Raheem Sterling is a fantastic signing, Marc Cucurella may have cost more than they wanted, but he was sought after by Man City as well. He’s a very good player, a quality player.

“But they are going to need to spend more, without a doubt. They need a focal point in that team.”

On his part, Shearer added, “I think Chelsea have made some good signings, but they still need a central forward.

“I know they have got [Armando] Broja, but it might take time for him. They have lost Romelu Lukaku, so they need a new striker. No doubt about it.”
