Danny Mills has urged England to target Chelsea defender Emerson Palmieri in the Euro 2020 final against Italy.

Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions face Roberto Mancini’s Italy in Sunday’s Euros final at Wembley and Mills believes the hosts can ‘exploit’ Emerson.

Emerson, who Chelsea signed from Roma in 2018, has played in four of Italy’s six matches at the European Championships and started their semi-final clash with Spain.

‘A big area that England can exploit is the left-back area, I think Emerson is a weakness,’ former defender Mills told talkSPORT.

‘Compare him to Spinazzola, he was fantastic and he attacked a lot more and is good defensively. I think you can get at Emerson.

‘I don’t think he’s the sharpest, he hasn’t played that much football, and if there is a weak link in that back four now, that will be the place to try and exploit it.’

Another Chelsea star, midfielder Jorginho, scored the winning penalty in Italy’s shootout victory over Spain in the semis.

The Italians will represent a significant challenge for England on Sunday and legendary manager Jose Mourinho has delivered his verdict on the match.

‘I didn’t make many mistakes trying to predict or understand what Gareth would do in every match,’ he said.

‘When they changed the system to play against Germany, that was pure pragmatism and that was pure reading the situation and reading the dangers.

‘They came back to a back four and kept the back four even against Denmark in the semi-finals. And looking at the way Italy plays, I don’t see a reason to change.

‘Italy’s power is in the midfield. That midfield is the engine of that team. The midfield players are better than the attacking players.

‘I don’t see England in any need of playing a back five. I see England in a great need to keep that great couple – Rice and Phillips – because it is there where the game is going to be decided in terms of more dominance or less dominance.’
