Jonny Hill, the Sale and England lock, has been hit with a 10-week ban from rugby as a result of a clash with a fan on 1 June.
The incident occurred at the Recreation Ground and saw the 30-year-old clash with a supporter after Sale were beaten by Bath.
A 28-year-old man complained that he suffered a cut above his eye as a result of the fracas and ‘physical abuse’ from the player.
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) charged HIll with ‘conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game’ which he accepted.
There was the potential of a 20-week ban, but he has avoided that fate and could actually be back playing next month.
The ban has been backdated and four weeks have been suspended until next season so Hill is able to play again as soon as 7 December.
Headed up the English rugby disciplinary panel was KC Philip Evans, who said: ‘The panel concluded the appropriate starting point was a 20-week suspension from playing.
They also found the circumstances of this case to be exceptional and as a consequence, and because of the substantial mitigation available to Jonny Hill, that starting point was reduced to 10 weeks, four of which will be suspended until the conclusion of the 2025/26 season.
‘In addition, he is required to give a presentation to young players at the club which is to be recorded and provided to the RFU.
‘He will be available to play for Sale on December 7.’
A statement from Sale read: ‘Both the club and player accept the ruling made by the RFU disciplinary panel and we now look forward to getting Jonny back on the pitch in a Sale shirt as soon as possible.’
