England and Arsenal legend David Seaman has named the ‘best goalkeeper in Premier League history’.
Four-time FA Cup winner Seaman is widely considered one of the best shot-stoppers to ever play in the Premier League and one of the greatest England has produced.
Seaman made more than 500 appearances for Arsenal across a hugely impressive 13-year spell at the north London club.
The ex-Three Lions star won three league titles with the Gunners, including two in the space of five years under legendary manager Arsene Wenger.
At international level, Seaman was England’s No. 1 for the best part of a decade, finishing his career with 75 caps.
As an England and Arsenal great, Seaman is well-placed to give his opinion on the best goalkeeper in Premier League history and picked out former Manchester United star Peter Schmeichel.
Schmeichel played 398 games for United across eight seasons at Old Trafford, helping Sir Alex Ferguson’s side lift five Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the Champions League.
Asked by Metro who he rates as the best goalkeeper in Premier League history, Seaman said on behalf of his Betway podcast: ‘I’ve got to go for Peter Schmeichel.
‘Look at what he did and what he achieved. The way he kept goal was totally different from me, both styles obviously work, but he brought a new style into the Premier League.’
Another Arsenal legend, Ian Wright, also believes Schmeichel was on another level, naming the Dane as the toughest goalkeeper he faced during his career.
‘Schmeichel was tough, very tough. To the point where we were driven by a hatred of each other,’ Wright said on Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster’s podcast, ‘Fozcast’.
‘I scored a great goal against him in the Community Shield [in 1993] and he always says ‘yea it doesn’t really count’, but it does count towards the tally.
‘And I scored a couple of penalties against him in South Africa and stuff like that but he was somebody that when I went on the pitch, and I think it played in my detriment, I played into his hands, I wanted to score too much.
‘What I should done is backed off it, I can finish, play my game and I got wrapped up in wanting to score and to tease him with it.’
Schmeichel, meanwhile, revealed earlier this year who he believes is the best current goalkeeper in the Premier League.
‘Ederson is fantastic in terms of making big saves and 1v1 situations,’ Schmeichel said on the Stick to Football podcast with Sky Bet.
‘Alisson struggles a bit with his feet. There are a few mistakes that he would make that you don’t see from Ederson. That’s the only thing [between them].
‘Ederson is the best keeper in the Premier League. David Raya is coming close now too. He has really impressed me.
‘Once he got established as Arsenal’s number one and that competition situation got out of the way and Aaron Ramsdale left, there was a different aura around him.
‘He’s played well and has kept his team in a few games. He’s made some important saves. He has also eradicated all those mistakes that he made from having to be a good footballer.
‘Raya’s mentality gives him that power and not a lot of keepers are doing that. What he does there, which is brilliant, is that he comes out in a period of the game where it’s fantastic and there is so many people in front of him.
‘When you come out, you’re looking at the ball and someone might run into him, plus the goal is empty. I don’t like the timewasting from him, but I thought he always keeps his team in it.’
