Emre Can blasted referee Danny Makkelie following Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea which sealed their elimination from the Champions League.
Dortmund registered a 1-0 win in the first leg in Germany but Raheem Sterling pulled Chelsea level on aggregate before half time in the second leg at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea were awarded a penalty in the second half which Kai Havertz initially missed but Dutch referee Makkelie ordered a retake as Salih Ozcan encroached inside the area before he cleared the ball.
Havertz scored the retake to leave Dortmund fuming, while Chelsea were able to hold on to the 2-0 lead to secure their place in the Champions League quarter-final.
However, Can could face action from UEFA as he blasted the Dutch official during his post-match interview.
‘The referee… it was his fault today,’ Can said.
‘How can you give the second penalty in the situation? How does it work? That simply does not work!
‘I don’t give a s*** who walked in there before.
‘He was arrogant the whole game – that’s where it starts. We lost here undeservedly because of the referee.’
Former Dortmund midfielder Matthias Sammer conceded that Chelsea deserved to win the tie but described the decision to let Havertz retake his penalty as ‘a scandal’.
‘Chelsea have deservedly progressed. Because of their individual quality, they have a little bit more to offer and you have to acknowledge that,’ Sammer said.
‘The penalty plus the retake – that’s a solid scandal.
‘Makkelie is a very, very arrogant person. As a referee you also have a certain charisma.’
