Following the recent ban on metal scavenging by the Borno State government, metal scavengers popularly known as “Yan Ajakuta” are now trooping into Damaturu, the Yobe State capital for metal scrap business.
The development has become a source of concern for residents of the metropolis who are accusing some of the scavengers of vandalising public and private property as well as posing grave security threats to their communities.
The latest person to express such concern was the Emir of Damaturu, Shehu Hashi II Ibn Umar Al-Amin El-Kemeni during a periodic security meeting held at his palace, recently.
While addressing stakeholders shortly after the meeting, the Royal Father described the development as sad, despite measures put in place by security operatives, noting that there are reports of increase in the rate of crime in the state capital
“This time, the meeting focused on the recent complaints by our people that there is an increase in burglary and theft and we understand that the situation was mainly due to the activities of the metal scavengers crisscrossing the nooks and crannies of Damaturu.
“Their influx into Damaturu was necessitated by the banning of their activities by neighboring Borno State and as such their behaviours which include immoral dressing, carrying weapons among others. Theft has been obstructing the peace and security being enjoyed by our people”, he said.
According to him the matter has been reported to the security agencies. “I am sure they are working on it”.
The Monarch also called on the residents of Damaturu to be more security conscious and vigilant at all times, in addition to furnishing the security agencies with useful information that will help in tackling threats.
Also commenting on the development, the Chairman, Caretaker Management Committee, Damaturu local government council, Bukar Adamu described the report of the influx of the metal scavengers as well as their unwanted behaviors as worrisome.
He said the council is working closely with the emirate council among other stakeholders in the security sector to protect the lives and property of the people.
“We are determined to ensure that the threat posed by the metal scavengers among other social vices are tackled for peace and progress”, he assured.
