Relief has been brought to the Oke-Atan community of Ife, Osun State, after electricity supply was restored after three years.

This was due to the efforts of old students of St John’s Grammar School who recently bought a transformer to restore electricity to their alma mater.

The community learnt of the plan by the old students to purchase a transformer and set up a three-man committee to approach the alumni executive committee for help.

The approach resulted in joy after the alumni President, Dr. Festus Oshoba, told them that the old students had agreed to share the use of the transformer with them.

However, the community, according to the Baale of Oke-Atan, Chief Sikiru Okunrintirin, still had to raise N1.3 million to purchase the accessories to distribute the energy from the transformer into their homes.

With the return of electricity, the secretary of the community, Mr Taiwo Owoyomi, said, “We can now charge our phones; our children can read at night; we can iron our clothes. These were not possible before.”

The head of Ejesi, one of the settlements in Oke-Atan, Mr Awotide, recounted how the community was full of joy on the day electricity was restored.

“It was a day of celebration in the community because many residents had given up hope of ever using light again. Today, security has improved. Young people don’t roam the streets at night again and parents monitor their children better,” he said.
