Donny van de Beek is expected to leave Manchester United on loan in January, with Eintracht Frankfurt the favourites to snap up the midfielder on a short-term deal.

The Dutchman’s time at Old Trafford has been underwhelming to say the least, arriving from Ajax with a glowing reputation but failing to make any kind of impact.

The 26-year-old has made just 62 appearances since his 2020 move, unable to convince Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Erik ten Hag that he deserves a place in the first team.

Van de Beek has made just one Premier League appearance so far this season, coming off the substitutes’ bench in the home defeat to Crystal Palace in September.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Van de Beek is certain to leave Manchester United in January, with Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt the most likely destination on loan.

Surprise La Liga leaders Girona are also keen on the midfielder, but Frankfurt are leading the race with talks ongoing.

Van de Beek’s Manchester United contract runs until 2025, but the club would be very happy to do a deal to sell him on a permanent basis in the summer of 2024.

The Red Devils spent £40m on his services in 2020 and would only be able to recover a fraction of that next summer, although if he impresses on a loan deal in the second half of this season then his valuation could increase.

Van de Beek admitted in January that it is time for him to play regularly again, even if it means a pay-cut to leave Old Trafford.

‘I am bouncing to play matches again,’ he told The Mirror. ‘The manager is making different choices now. We have a big squad and I am not the only one knocking on the door. We’ll see in January what happens.

‘I need to start playing games very soon – if not at Man United then at another club. I think I have to be ambitious.

‘I have always been a lover of the game. I am absolutely crazy about football. I earn a good living at United, but money is not my motivation. I want to enjoy my work every day.’
