Eight family members travelling home for the new year celebration in Imo State have lost their lives in an auto crash.
The family members perished at the Amanwozuzu junction in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state.
As of the time of filing this report, policemen from the Ikeduru Local Government Area Division had deposited the bodies in a morgue.
The incident according to eyewitness happened around 3 pm on Friday 29 December has thrown the people in the area into mourning.
It was gathered the accident happened when the father of the family who was conveying his wife and children in a Sienna vehicle ran into a stationary truck carrying rods.
Police officers on the scene said the rod pierced the bodies of the victims and all of them died on the spot.
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Ikeduru LGA, Lucky Ahiole, a Chief Superintendent of Police, said the the driver of the Sienna vehicle ran into it. stationary truck that was parked at the roadside
Ahiole said, “It is terrible. Eight died and we have taken them to a morgue. We had to break the Sienna vehicle to bring out the dead bodies. The rod pierced their eyes and bodies and even the children died.”
However, an eyewitness said that the stationary truck carrying rods was blocking the road, noting that the tragedy could have been averted if the truck had been removed from the spot.
