The Egba indigenes, both at home and in the diaspora, are gearing up for the 38th Lisabi Day Celebration, which promises to be a grand affair. Themed “Back to Land: Panacea for Food Sustainability and Youth Employment in Egbaland,” the event aims to attract global attention with a series of engaging activities planned.
During a press conference at Ake Palace, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, shared insights about the festival, emphasizing that its success is a result of both individual and collective efforts. “Just like yesterday, the hands of the glorious clock of Egba history and development have ticked up to a year, showcasing our progressive, dynamic, and culturally rich heritage,” he stated.
This year’s celebration will honor the late Alake, Oba Ladapo Ademola, who ruled from 1920 to 1962, recognizing his significant contributions to the region’s history and development. The festival is set to take place from March 31 to April 6, 2025, and aims to present a revitalized celebration that aligns with its foundational principles while addressing contemporary realities.
The schedule of events kicks off on Monday, March 31, 2025, with the booming of guns at Olumo Rock, youth-led cleaning of the four sectional palaces, and public mobilization by women. Additional activities include the commissioning of Ikopa Hall, traditional Ayo games at Ake Palace, and football and wrestling competitions in various venues across Abeokuta.
Tuesday’s agenda features an exhibition and agricultural show, finals of a quiz competition, and other educational programs for children. On Wednesday, a seminar on food sustainability will be held, alongside a chieftaincy installation and sports competitions.
Thursday will see a procession to Lisabi Forest, where traditional leaders and community members will commemorate the festival’s hero of the year. Friday’s events include a procession to Olumo Rock, traditional prayers, cultural performances, and a youth musical concert.
The grand finale on Saturday at the Amphitheatre in the palace will feature the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, as the special guest of honor. Highlights include the Egba fashion celebration, horse riding, and the launch of an Egba-themed book.
The festivities will conclude with a thanksgiving service at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Ake, followed by a midnight display of Oro.
The 38th Lisabi Day Celebration is poised to be a momentous occasion that celebrates the rich heritage and vibrant culture of Egbaland.
