“It was during my graduation presentation in primary 3 at St. Philips. School had dismissed and I was so excited to go home and tell my mum about how I was selected as the only boy to be part of the fashion parade group for my school’s graduation ceremony. Oh my goodness 🫣

I got home that afternoon from school and told my mom about the decision made in school. First reaction, She wasn’t shocked after-all I was effeminate as a kid but she was rather surprised my school would allow me dress in female attire especially since it was a missionary school.

She was having these thoughts whilst showing so much excitement for me because she knew how much it mattered to me as an effeminate kid. See, I was dancing in the parlor, I didn’t take off my uniform, it was as though the graduation was already happening in my father’s house😂😂

She gave me her approval and told me she’d do anything in her place to make sure I participate. Every Friday for the months we rehearsed in preparation for the event, my mom gave me her blouse, George and canopy. Different one for every rehearse. She made sure of that!!

She believed in me, coached me, thought me how to walk, how to tie my canopy, George and even got me makeup kit🥹. You guys, these actions, every single one of them made me realize the length my mom would go to make sure I get anything as long as it makes me happy, regardless.

Three days before the event, my mom blew my mind🥹❤️she made new blouse that fit so perfectly for me, bought me George, canopy, accessories (Everything to match) and magnetic earrings.(that was the first time I wore earrings) I hugged my beautiful mom and began to cry tears of joy.

It’s graduation day! My mom had already done everything, the only thing left was to go out there and cement myself to an audience of over 1000. We started the competition, kpa kpa kpa, I tired my George, canopy and did my makeup.( peep my makeup kit on the table)🫣😂 gurl I ate!

I finished first and paraded my self like a true Igbo babe😌. My mom was there, physically, cheering me! I could hear her screaming in the background. She had a proud mom moment and I was so happy she held my hands throughout the entire process. Peep my statement canopy! I shone!

See ehn, my mom was there the whole time to guide me, encourage me, cheer me, and she did all these with no regrets. She didn’t for a second make me feel like boys shouldn’t tire canopy as the society has it. She supported me. She has always been my HERO. Suzy Benz, I love you!💕”
