Mendy joined Chelsea from Rennes in 2020m impressing at Stamford Bridge in his first two seasons but his place in the first-team has come under scrutiny this season.
The Senegal international was sidelined with a knee injury when Graham Potter arrived in west London to replace Thomas Tuchel, with the former Brighton boss turning to Kepa. The Spaniard kept his place in the side with a string of impressive performances.
While Mendy started Chelsea’s last four matches heading into the World Cup break, those came with Kepa sidelined through injury with reports this week suggesting the former will consider his options.
Reports have also suggested Potter is looking to bring in his former Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez in the summer.
Mendy is currently with the Senegal squad in Qatar ahead of their opener against Netherlands on Monday and while his focus is solely on the World Cup, suggests he will have to make decision on his club future.
‘I’m in Qatar first and foremost to represent my country and to put everything on the line so that we play a successful tournament,’ Mendy told wettbasis.
‘What will happen afterwards with the Blues (Chelsea), we will see. The season is still very long. Recently I got a few games again. One thing is for sure: I will continue to give my all with the hope of getting more playing time again.’
Senegal take on hosts Qatar on Friday before their final group game against Ecuador on 29 November.
Despite the tough opener against Louis van Gaal’s side, Mendy is confident they can reach the knock out stages were a clash against England potentially awaits.
‘We (Senegal) are particularly hungry and have a lot of plans,’ Mendy said. ‘Making it to the round of 16 should be the minimum goal. After that, a lot is certainly possible.
‘At first glance, we might think that we have been relatively lucky with the draw. But it will still not be an easy task.
‘Starting against the Netherlands will not be a pleasant task at all. In my eyes, the Oranje team belongs to the extended circle of favourites. We are dealing with the Netherlands, among others, who have world-class players such as Frenkie De Jong, Virgil van Dijk and Memphis Depay.
‘It’s never easy to hold your own against the hosts (Qatar). Besides, we don’t know much about the level of this team and we don’t really know the players either.
‘Ecuador is a physically strong team that we will not underestimate. Nevertheless, we will do everything in our power to reach the last 16. We have the potential anyway.’
