The Economic Commission of West African States, ECOWAS, has praised Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Liberia for peacefully resolving their February electoral issues.
President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Touray, said this during the 64th session of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government on Sunday in Abuja.
‘’The authority welcomes the peaceful resolution of the electoral dispute in the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the peaceful outcome of the dialogue between the opposition and the government in the Republic of Sierra Leone,” he said.
The authority commended member nations and the ECOWAS commission for their efforts to consolidate democracy, peace, security, and stability in the region.
“The authority notes in particular the peaceful elections that took place during the year in Nigeria, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone and Liberia.’’
According to Touray, the authorities also praised the electoral process that resulted in a peaceful transition in Liberia, as well as President Goerge Weah’s acceptance of the results.
Touray added that the authority is deeply concerned about the region’s prolonged insecurity and instability, which has resulted in terrorism, violent extremism, and unconstitutional government changes.
He said the authority has directed the commission to undertake discussions with stakeholders about the relationship between election procedures, democracy, and development.
