The Dukes of Hazard star John Schneider has revealed the show’s heroic car General Lee has been ruined by Hurricane Ida, which has torn through parts of the United States causing irreparable damage and killing 40 people in its wake.

The 61-year-old starred as Bo in the classic comedy from the 1980s, and posted photos of the vehicle which he kept from the show crushed underneath a tree.

Schneider and his family avoided being hurt by the storm, but he shared many images of the destruction on his home.

He wrote on Facebook: ‘Well… When something like this happens you have two choices: Tears and laughter. I choose laughter.

‘So… What’s your caption? Here’s mine: Miss Ida stopped by to see the General at Miss Shirley’s last night…’

He shared several updates with fans, who were also crushed by the damage done to the beloved General.

One fan commented: ’Seeing those general Lee’s got my hubby a bit teary eyed. He loves that car. If he could trade me in on that car he would do it in a heartbeat,’ while another echoed a similar sentiment, posting: ‘This is so sad!! Loved watching Dukes growing up! Had the biggest crush on Bo/John!! Always wanted to meet him!’

A third pleaded: ‘Please, please do not send the General Lee to the scrap heap. I beg you, everything is fixable & the General is definitely worth all it takes.’

One particularly grief-stricken fan called the incident a ‘national tragedy’.

Thankfully, Schneider began to take the chaos with good humour, posting another photo of General Lee in a pretty bad way, captioning the image with a quote directed at his Dukes of Hazzard character: ‘No, Bo… I said OVER the tree!’

General Lee – an orange 1969 Dodge Charger – appeared in every Dukes episode apart from one, and was as much a main character of the show as the Dukes boys, Bo and Luke, as well as their cousins Coy and Vance.
