Multichoice, the leading satellite television provider in Sub-Saharan Africa, has announced an imminent increase in subscription prices for its DStv and GOtv services in Nigeria. The price adjustment, coming approximately one year after the previous review, will affect various bouquet packages across both platforms.
Industry sources reveal that the DStv Compact bouquet will increase from N15,700 to N19,000, while the Family and Access bouquets will rise to N11,000 and N6,000 from N9,300 and N5,100 respectively. GOtv subscribers will also experience price adjustments, with the Value package moving from N3,600 to N3,900, and GOtv Plus increasing from N4,850 to N5,800.
The price hike has been attributed to the depreciation of the naira and escalating energy costs. Since the implementation of government economic reforms in 2023, including fuel subsidy removal and naira floatation, the country has witnessed significant price increases across various sectors, with inflation reaching 34.80 percent as of December 2024.
This development coincides with widespread consumer dissatisfaction over recent increases in telecommunications tariffs. Following the Nigerian Communications Commission’s approval for a 50 percent tariff increase, major telecom operators including MTN and Airtel have implemented higher rates for calls and data services.
Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, has indicated that the telecommunications sector should expect periodic tariff reviews as part of ongoing economic adjustments.
