The Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Ajayi, has expressed concern over the agency’s public perception, noting that many Nigerians view the organization as intimidating rather than friendly. This observation was made during the 2025 Distinguished Personality Lecture at the University of Ilorin’s Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies.
Speaking through Deputy Director Patrick Ikenweiwe, Ajayi emphasized that this negative perception impacts the quality and quantity of intelligence gathering, ultimately affecting peace-building efforts and national integration. The DSS chief advocated for strengthening intelligence agencies and reconsidering recruitment processes.
Meanwhile, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has praised the DSS for its progressive stance on gender equality, particularly in appointing women to key leadership positions. During a courtesy visit by DSS officials led by Deputy Director-General Afolashade Adekayaoja at the Presidential Villa, Mrs. Tinubu highlighted the Tinubu administration’s commitment to women’s empowerment and leadership inclusion.
The First Lady stressed the importance of recognizing women’s contributions across various sectors, expressing confidence in their ability to collaborate effectively for national progress. Mrs. Adekayaoja reciprocated by acknowledging the First Lady’s consistent advocacy for gender equality and reaffirmed the DSS’s dedication to national security and development.
