Sometimes, I see myself as someone blessed with ideas and brimming with a lot of energy. I want to do everything at once, as long as it benefits society and regardless of creed, religion, ethnicity, or gender. But, like everyone else, I face limitations. Despite my efforts and youthful vigor, there’s always more to achieve. Will I ever fulfill my lofty dreams? That thought often crosses my mind.

Then I look at someone like Inspector General of Police, Dr. Solomon Arase, (retired) and I am inspired. He is a man whose life proves that age and retirement are no barriers to greatness. Though retired, he remains a force of transformation, touching countless lives and setting an example for all of us to follow.

He is no ordinary retiree. As the former Inspector General of Police, he served Nigeria with distinction, the records are there for confirmation. His dedication to justice, order, and societal growth was evident during his tenure. Now, post-retirement, he continues to blaze trails. Not tired but retired.

I learnt that in the first quarter of next year, he plans to release two books: one on election management and security, and another whose details remains sketchy and yet to be revealed by those close to him. These literary contributions will not only enrich Nigeria’s intellectual, politics and electoral landscape but also solidify his legacy as a scholar, security expert and public servant. He ticks the boxes on every fronts as one of those we should emulate as role models.

But Arase’s influence extends beyond the pages of books. He recently hosted a lively Christmas celebration for children in Owan West and Owan East Local Government Areas. The event was a spectacle of joy, complete with games, entertainment including bouncing castle, food, and gifts. For many of these children, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, rivaling the festivities in larger cities. His aim? I learnt was to ensure that even rural children and those visiting from urban centers with their parents, could fully experience the joy of the season. They all went home with gifts and joy written on their faces.

Apart from that, what sets Arase apart is his unyielding and unwavering commitment to societal development; you simply can’t fault it. Despite being a native of Benin City in Edo South Senatorial District, he has devoted himself to uplifting lives in Edo North, inspired by his late mother’s roots in the area. He cannot disappoint his mother.

For over a decade, the Mercy Igbe-Arase Foundation, named in honor of his mother, has provided scholarships to at least 100 beneficiaries, many of whom are now practicing medical doctors. Imagine the magnitude of this investment. It is not just in funds, but in hope and opportunity. These young professionals owe their futures to the vision and generosity of one retired police officer – Dr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase.

Of course, I came across one of the beneficiaries sometimes ago, now a practicing doctor who shared his testimony saying, “Without this scholarship, I would never have achieved my dreams. Dr. Arase didn’t just invest in me; he believed in my potential without knowing him. Without any prior relationship. Today, I am living proof of his impact.”

He is among several others, whose stories gives credence to the profound ripple effect of Arase’s initiatives. While many of us and retirees seek quietude, lamenting our unfulfilled dreams or the wrongs done to us, Arase remains undeterred. He refuses to rest on his laurels or lament missed opportunities. Instead, he continues to create new milestones. And this isn’t because their No challenges but his resoluteness.

So, this year alone, he has authored two books that are set for release in the coming year, organized a grand Christmas party for children, bringing joy to countless families and planning the 10th anniversary of the Mercy Igbe-Arase Foundation Scholarship Award. I think his drive and energy are unmatched, which of course, leaves one to wonder and ask, “When does he rest”?

For me therefore, Dr. Arase exemplifies the finest ideals of leadership, compassion, and service. Through his investments in education, his efforts in community development, and his unyielding commitment to societal upliftment, he has become my role mode. Of course, I have also benefited greatly from his generosity. Not once or twice including inspiration, encouragement and knowledge.

Even more importantly for me, it’s not just the scale of his achievements but the heart behind them that sets him apart. Don’t forget that he could have chosen a quiet, comfortable retirement, yet he continues to give selflessly. He is, indeed, a man with a torch, illuminating the lives of others and paving the way for a brighter future.

Let me quickly add that Arase is more than a retired police officer. He’s simply a living legend. His life is proof that service to humanity does not end with retirement. History will judge him kindly as a man who refused to rest while there was still work to be done for the common good.

And finally, Dr. Solomon Arase is my Man of the Year.
