The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) governorship candidate for Taraba State, Professor Sani Yahaya, has warned eligible voters against selling their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) for mere peanuts.
The appeal came on Monday in Mutum-Biyu, the administrative headquarters of Gassol Council, shortly after the flag-off of the party’s governorship campaign.
He said, “I urge you not to sell your votes for money because the money would finish within a short time but the suffering would be for a long time. You will regret it later”.
The candidate said, “It is only by doing so that we will defend what we voted for. He urged everyone to go to the Office of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) to collect their PVCs, saying it is the only way they can change the narrative.
Certain that his party would emerge triumphant in the polls, he admonished the youths not to make themselves available as tools in the hands of overzealous politicians to destroy the forthcoming elections.
He said the electoral Act has spelt out clearly the punishment for every electoral offence, emphasising the need for the youths to distance themselves from being used as thugs before, during and after the general elections.
Narrating how he was dragged to court by the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kefas Agbu, and the case later dismissed, he said, ”only the people have the final say about who becomes the next governor of Taraba.”
He called on his fellow contestants and other candidates seeking various elective positions to play the game according to the laid down rules, warning politicians to remember that only God gives power.
Yahaya also urged the people, especially eligible voters not to mix religion and tribal sentiments with politics and tasked them to come out en mass to vote for credible candidates.
He said, “Nobody should deceive us along religious or tribal lines. We should vote for credibility, I am pleading with you to vote for a good candidate for the development of Taraba State.”
