DOING ADMISSIONS RIGHT IS NON-NEGOTIABLE  – ABDULHAMEED

The Board has, once again, reiterated the need to adhere to all rules and regulations guiding the admission process to avoid future problems for candidates and institutions alike.

This was contained in the address of the Ogun State Coordinator, Mr. Hakeem AbdulHameed, to the newly-appointed officials of some institutions in the State, who visited him in his office between 8th and 12th December, 2024.

The officials are the new Vice-Chancellors of Covenant University, Ota, Prof. Timothy A. Anake; and Chrisland University, Abeokuta, Prof. Oyedunni Arologun.

According to the Coordinator, processing admissions through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) is the only way to achieve credible admissions. He added that the ongoing confirmation of all admissions processed outside CAPS between 2017 and 2020 as submitted by affected institutions would not have been necessary if the right process was followed. He stressed that the confirmation of admissions done illegally even before 2016 must also be confirmed regardless of the situation of the database of the admitting institutions. He, therefore, enjoined the officials to adhere to all advisories issued by the Board on the admission process.

The Vice-Chancellor, Chrisland University, in his reaction, sought clarifications on transferred students.

The Head, Matriculation Monitoring Unit, Mrs. Kafayat Ibiwoye, explained that students in the Local Transfer category must have spent a session or more in a university before seeking transfer to another that is willing to admit them. She explained further that the original year of admission must not be overlooked as any course the proposed institution is giving the student must be an accredited course in the year the student gained admission. She attributed the failure of some students to attain Local Transfer as a result of this error. On the other hand, she stated that Foreign Transfer is the movement from a foreign university to another one in Nigeria and the student must also have spent a session or more before transferring. In both considerations, a candidate must be placed at a level where they must remain for two sessions before graduating.

In his contribution, the Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Prof. Anake, said going through the history of Covenant University, he discovered that the institution won an award for “Compliance with Admission Guidelines” in the 2020 edition of NATAP-M organised by the Board. He, therefore, expressed his desire to ensure compliance with all advisories not just because he would love such to be recorded during his administration but because doing so is the only way.
