However, there is a reprieve for players at Qatar 2022 with a reset of yellow cards after a certain point in the competition
Here is everything you need to know about yellow cards at this winter’s World Cup.
Do yellow cards get cancelled after the World Cup group stage?
Unfortunately for players who often find themselves in the referee’s notebook, yellow cards will not be reset after the group stage.
A player who picks up their second yellow card of the group stage in the final match of the group will be suspended for the round of 16 game.
Any player who receives their second yellow card of the tournament in the round of 16 game will miss the quarter-final through suspension.
However, any player collecting their second yellow card of the World Cup in the quarter-final will not be suspended for the semi-final.
This is because it is after the end of the quarter-final stage that yellow card records are reset.
The amnesty for yellow cards was moved from the end of the group stage to after the quarter-finals in 2010, with FIFA keen to ensure that players would not miss out on featuring in the final because of suspension.
During the World Cup semi-final in 1990, Paul Gascoigne wept on the pitch when he received the yellow card that would have ruled him out of the final if England made it through against West Germany.
Michael Ballack also missed the 2002 World Cup final against Brazil after being cautioned in the semi-final against South Korea.
However, a red card at any stage of the tournament will result in the player missing the next match.
