“A siege is a prolonged military blockade of a city or fortress to force it to surrender. The purpose of a siege is to take away the advantage of the city’s massive defensive walls by cutting off its supplies and contacts from the outside. Without supplies, the defending city would be forced to surrender or attack the besieging army. A siege can also be defined as a prolonged period of misfortune. In the ancient law of Israel, siege is classed with drought, pestilence and exile as punishments with which God would visit His people for their disobedience (Deut. 28:47-57).Siege can be spiritual, political, economic, territorial, marital, etc. Siege can also be on an individual, a family, a community, a Church, a marriage, a nation, etc. Spiritually, a siege is a situation in which an individual or a territory is surrounded by a stronger spiritual power, for the purpose of capturing or tormenting, and taking away freedom. On several occasions, the children of Israel, due to their stubborn attitude towards God and some other factors, experienced sieges of varying forms and severity. Whenever a siege is lifted, the people who were its victims rejoice because it is not a pleasant experience at all. The good news is that, in Christ Jesus, God is able to break any siege and bring freedom. The Church has been saddled with the divine mandate to bring relief to souls under siege (Rom. 8:18-21).”
