Dimitar Berbatov has urged Manchester United to sign a right back in the January transfer window to provide competition for current starter Aaron Wan-Bissaka, after drawing comparisons to Luke Shaw’s improvement since the club brought in Alex Telles.

Wan-Bissaka, who is renowned as one of the best one-on-one tacklers in the Premier League, has become a mainstay in the United team under Solksjaer since he joined the club from Crystal Palace back in 2019.

The 23-year-old is expected to form part of a formidable back four for the Red Devils this season, alongside fellow Englishmen Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire, as well as new signing and four-time Champions League winner Raphael Varane.

But former Premier League striker Berbatov believes that in order to get the best out of Wan-Bissaka, the club must bring in another accomplished player who can operate in the same position, with United currently relying on Diogo Dalot as back up.

‘Right back [they need to improve], in my opinion. I was really happy that they bought a second back, and what a second back [Varane], a serial winner,’ Betfair Ambassador, Dimitar Berbatov told Metro.co.uk.

‘But a right back to give more push to Wan-Bissaka, to drive that competition and everywhere else is a complete squad.’

Berbatov believes Shaw's performances have improved since Alex Telles has arrived at the club.

Berbatov also praised Shaw’s recent performances that saw him play a key role in England’s Euro 2020 campaign after previously helping United finish third in the Premier League last term.

The Bulgarian thinks that Shaw’s performance levels have risen since the arrival of Brazilian left back Telles, who has provided much needed cover for the former Southampton defender.

‘You see you sign a left back and someone who can drive you who can do your best in the case of Alex Telles, then how this raises the performance of Luke Shaw,’ Berbatov added.

‘Because you think ‘wait a minute, this guy is going to take my position.’ So you need to push even more into my training programme and here we go the result is he’s had a great tournament, a great Premier League and he’s going strong. So I hope that he continues that way, but at the moment he’s very very good at what he is doing.’

United, who have begun the new Premier League season with two wins and a draw from their opening three matches, play host to Newcastle on Saturday looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign.

Dimitar Berbatov was speaking ahead of the launch of Betfair’s new VAR-Batov series, where the Premier League legend will be judging the unfair moments in football that affect so many punters. Watch the first in the series on Betfair’s twitter next week.
