United have opened talks with Palace over a deal to sign the former England goalkeeper on loan until the end of the season.
Erik ten Hag is eager for the club to bring in another no2 option to provide cover for David de Gea, with Martin Dubravka ending his spell at the club last week after two unimpressive performances.
Butland has six months left on his current deal at Selhurst Park with the option of a 12-month extension. It is thought Palace could trigger that option and give the loan move to Old Trafford the green light.
The Athletic report that during negotiations, it is expected that a move for Wan-Bissaka back to Palace will come up.
The right-back joined United from Palace in a £50million deal in 2020 and having been deemed surplus to requirements in Manchester in the summer, was linked with a return to the capital.
Wan-Bissaka’s future at United appeared bleak with Diogo Dalot the firm first-choice under Erik ten Hag during the first half of the season.
The 25-year-old managed just four minutes of game time prior to the World Cup but with Dalot injured, has started United’s four games since the restart with a string of much-improved performances.
Dalot has now recovered from that hamstring issue suffered while on World Cup duty with Portugal, coming off the bench for the final 20 minutes in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth.
And Wan-Bissaka could still be allowed to leave with the manager’s first-choice option fit again, despite his recent run in the side.
West Ham United have also been credited with interest in the former Palace youngster, while Wolves are also monitoring the situation.
United meanwhile had been linked with a January move for Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong but their focus in January is on bringing in a new forward.
Limited to loan moves, the club have been offered Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix but loan fee demands from the Spanish side have so far prevented any deal from being done.
