Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Manchester United did not surprise Khabib Nurmagomedov

UFC icon Khabib Nurmagomedov says Cristiano Ronaldo told him he was ‘bored’ at Juventus in a conversation they had before the forward’s return to Manchester United.

In an extraordinary turn of events, Ronaldo, 36, had looked set to damage his Old Trafford legacy by joining arch-rivals Manchester City but the intervention of Sir Alex Ferguson saw the Portuguese change his mind and re-sign for the Red Devils.

The veteran attacker has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at the Theatre of Dreams and could make his second debut this weekend as third-placed United return to Premier League action at home to Newcastle.

It marks an incredible turnaround from United’s perspective, with many supporters already resigned to Ronaldo playing for their ‘noisy neighbours’ just hours before he was announced as the club’s fourth new arrival.

Last week, however, former UFC champion Khabib claimed the move did not come as a surprise to him due to a chat he had with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner earlier in the summer.

‘A month ago, he told me that he was moving to Manchester United,’ he told reporters at the New Knowledge Marathon in Moscow.

‘I expected this deal to take place. I think that Manchester United is more suitable for him than Juventus. For me, the transition was not a surprise.’

Khabib expanded on this conversation during an interview with RT Sport MMA this week and revealed new details of the chat, with Ronaldo supposedly telling him he was ‘bored’ after three years in Italy with Juventus.

‘I wouldn’t like to reveal our private chat. Well, he told me that he was bored in Italy and that he would like to move to England,’ the Russian said.

‘For real, when I watch Italian football… I  am not a big fan of it. English football, on the contrary and I would never switch it off.

‘No matter which team is playing, it’s always a spectacle.’

Asked whether he thinks Ronaldo is better than Lionel Messi, Khabib replied: ‘Yes, I do.

‘Well, Messi plays very well, too. He is one of the best players ever. I think they are on the same level skill-wise, but Cristiano has more charisma.’

Ronaldo, who has taken over the No.7 shirt from Edinson Cavani, is set to become the highest paid player in Premier League football on eye-watering wages of £480,000-a-week.

United fans will be desperate to see Ronaldo pull on their colours again this weekend but, according to The Sun, the Portugal international may have to settle for a place on the substitutes bench.
