The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has postponed its decision on the bail application for former queen of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Shilekunola, broadcaster Hamzat Oriyomi, and school principal Fasasi Abdullahi, to Monday, January 13, 2025.
The trio has been in custody at the Nigerian Correctional Services facility in Agodi since December 24, following a tragic stampede during a Christmas Funfair they organized, which claimed the lives of 35 children.
During Tuesday’s hearing at High Court 8, Ring Road, Ibadan, defense counsel appealed for their release, citing constitutional grounds and the health challenges of one of the defendants. However, Oyo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abiodun Aikomo, opposed the request, arguing that the applicants failed to provide sufficient grounds for bail.
Justice K.B. Olawoyin adjourned the matter after hearing arguments from both sides. The defense emphasized the unconstitutionality of the “holding charge” under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, while the state maintained the detention was lawful.
The case has attracted significant public interest, with both supporters and critics of the defendants closely following developments.
