The Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam has said the services of youth corps members were crucial to ensuring the safety, security and well-being of citizens.
Speaking during the presentation of a report on the role of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in improving policing in Nigeria, held in Abuja at the weekend, Giadam said corps members’ roles in the ministry are a testament to their willingness to serve and protect the country with honour and integrity.
Gaidam, in a statement signed by the Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations in the ministry, Bolaji Kazeem, added that the momentous occasion of the NYSC book launch/presentation programme stands as a testimony to the unity, diversity, and strength of Nigeria.
“Remember that you are not just serving the Ministry of Police Affairs, you are serving the people of Nigeria.
“Your actions, no matter how small, can create positive change and impact the lives of those around you. Stay focused, stay dedicated, and strive to be your best version,” he advised.
According to him, the NYSC programme is a catalyst for accelerated national development and implored the corps members to take with utmost seriousness, the nation’s clarion call to selfless service.
He said: “The future of this country lies in your hands. You have a most important role to play in shaping our corporate destiny. You must never mortgage this unique opportunity and you must not shun your responsibility towards the nation.”
“The corps members posted to the ministry to serve our nation, and their enrollment in the scheme at this critical period when our nascent democracy is trying to find its feet places you in a historic position to contribute individually and collectively, to ensure that democratic governance succeeds in Nigeria.
“As youths, you are to champion the crusade against the social vices, such as yahoo yahoo, waywardness and unruly behaviours that have bedevilled this country.
“Vices such as electoral malpractices and political violence should be eradicated. You owe it to yourself and to the nation not to allow yourselves to be recruited by agents of destabilization to truncate our nascent democracy.
In his goodwill message, the Director General of NYSC, represented by the Assistant Director of Human Resources Management, HRM in the Federal Capital Territory, Mrs Chika Chris-Moneke lauded the conducive atmosphere created for the corp members to come up with the initiative of contributing to policing in the country.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, noted the commitment, zeal and courage of the corps members serving in the ministry to learn and contribute to the policing development in the country.
He commended all the directors who have contributed to mentoring the corp members, enabling them to bring their innovation, youthfulness, and technology to the system.
