A former chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists,NUJ, Imo State Council, Mr Ben Osuagwu, has called on the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma and the Police Commissioner, Aboki Danjuma to intervene in the purported sale of the Union’s Press Centre in Owerri.
Osuagwu stated that the NUJ Press Centre, on the Owerri-Port Harcourt road, was given to journalists by the then military governor of Imo State, Commodore Amadi Ikwechegh, along with all official documents and titles.
In a statement he personally issued on Saturday, Osuagwu expressed dismay and wondered how some people would wake up after collecting money from some individuals and claim that they will sell the Press Centre to them.
The statement read: “Such a move is absolutely outrageous, insulting to the sensibilities of not only journalists in Imo State but to all journalists across the country and their noble friends and patrons.”
He appealed to the state governor and the Commissioner of Police to “stop the rascality of those individuals. ”
According to him: “The matter I learnt is in court. They should allow the matter to end in the court. Why hurry to go and lock up the centre?”
He added: “We say no to the illegal and criminal sale of the Imo NUJ Press Centre. Governor Hope Uzodinma should not allow this criminality to happen during his time as governor of Imo State.”
