McGregor and Chandler are set to coach opposing teams on the new series of The Ultimate Fighter later this year before facing off later this year on a date still to be determined.
The Dubliner has not fought since July 2021 when he suffered a broken leg in his second straight defeat to Dustin Poirier in their trilogy fight. Chandler is also coming off a defeat to Poirier, with the three-time Bellator champion suffering a submission defeat last November.
Looking ahead to the fight, Chandler’s coach Greg Jones is wary that McGregor could be ‘too sharp’ for his fighter in standing exchanges.
But he believes the 36-year-old is ‘not that stupid of arrogant’ to try beat McGregor at his own game and believes he will instead ‘wrestle the s**t out of him’ to get the win.
‘Michael could make it a boring, winnable fight if he chose to, he could wrestle him. He could get him tired and wrestle the s*** out of him,’ Jones told Casinos En Ligne.
‘Now does Michael have any intention of doing that, I do not know.
‘Judging by his past two performances, I don’t think he does. The fight with Conor would probably look very similar to those last two contests.’
He continued: ‘Michael would go out there, start off striking him, and he’s probably going to get landed on and land some of his own early.
‘Probably then look at level changes and the first round will probably end with a crazy exchange, wrestling or striking.
‘If Michael wants to get settled in, towards round two or three, he’ll start fighting a bit more smart and tactical because he doesn’t want to get into a barnburner with a sharpshooter like Conor.
‘The deciding factor will be how much he wrestles. Can he beat Conor in a full on striking bout, no. Conor is too sharp.
‘Can he make it a striking bout with wrestling mixed in, yes, he could win that fight. Can he make it an exciting wrestling fight, he can win that too.
‘But a straight up fight, he’s not that stupid or arrogant to make it that. It’s just about how he’s able to regulate his emotions when the cage door closes.’
