…Nigeria May Face Japan in Round of 16 matches.
North Korea on Sunday night kept alive the home of lifting her 3rd title of the world U20 female football tournament beating Netherlands 2-0 to stroll into the knockout stages of Round 16 in Columbia from Group F.
She got her first goal at 45+2nd minute when Jon gave Il-son Choe a pass to score. Choe got two goals against Costa Rica and another goal against Argentina making five goals.
Kum Jong scored the 2nd goal for North Korea in the 64th minute from H. Sin connect.
North Korea had beaten Argentina 6-2 and hammered Costa Rica 9-0 while Netherlands canned Costa Rica 2-0 and played 3-3 draw with Argentina.
Netherlands is in her 3rd appearance at the world cup having placed 4th at Costa Rica 2022 when she lost in the 3ed place match to Brazil 1-4 before Ref Vincentia Amedona of Togo and a crowd of 15,672 fans. She defeated Nigeria 2-0; lost 1-2 to Spain and lost 1-4 to Brazil in some of the matches played in Costa Rica, She was stopped at the quarterfinal stage at France 2018.
North Korea in her 9th appearances won the title in Russia 2006 in a 5-0 slam of China; won again at Papua New Guinea 2016 by beating France 3-1. She got the Silver at Chile 2008 when she lost to USA in the final and placed 4th at Canada 2014 losing to France 2-3.
North Korea had beaten Japan by a lone goal on 10th March 2024; mauled South Korea 3-0 on 13th March 2024 and defeated Japan 2-1 on 16th March 2024.
In the other Group F game, Argentina beat Costa Rica 1-0 with the goal scored by Kishi Nunez who now has three goals to her credit. VAR disallowed a penalty for Costa Rica at 55th minute.
North Korea thereby topped Group F with 9 points and +15 goals difference; Netherlands was 2nd with 4 points but no goal difference; Argentina made the 3rd position also with 4 points but -3 goals deficit while Costa Rica went home with no point and -12 goals deficit.
The group E matches to conclude the group stages is meant for midnight of Sunday when New Zealand will try a comeback against Ghana and Japan will face Austria,
