Liverpool have completed the signing of Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth around £37m.
The Dutch international has become Jurgen Klopp’s first signing of the January transfer window in a major boost to Liverpool’s top four hopes.
The Reds had beaten off long-standing interest from Manchester United to secure the signing of one of the hottest young talents in the game.
But who exactly is Liverpool’s new signing?
Here is everything you need to know.
Which clubs has Cody Gakpo played for?
Before moving to Anfield, Gakpo played for Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, having joined the club’s academy as a seven year-old in 2006.
Born in Eindhoven, he made his professional debut for the club’s reserve side in the Dutch second division in 2016, before making the step up to the senior team in 2018.
The 23 year-old made his debut for the Netherlands at Euro 2020, coming on as a substitute to replace Frenkie De Jong in a group stage game against North Macedonia.
How many goals and assists did Cody Gakpo get at PSV?
Gakpo had registered an impressive 55 goals in his 159 appearances for PSV.
The forward also recorded 50 assists in his four year spell in the side.
Gakpo has also scored six goals in his 14 caps for the Netherlands, including three goals at the World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
What is his best position?
Despite being right-footed, Gakpo typically played on the left during his time in Dutch football.
Regular viewers of the Eredivisie were used to the sight of Gakpo cutting in on his right foot and taking up a more central position.
During the World Cup, Gakpo was deployed in the centre forward position to great effect by Louis van Gaal, which represents another option for Klopp.
What has been his career highlight?
Gakpo was voted the Dutch Footballer of the Year for his stellar 2021-22 season, which saw him produce 21 goals and 15 assists in all competitions in his most productive season to date.
Despite finishing second in the league to Ajax last season, Gakpo helped fire PSV to cup success after scoring the winning goal against Ten Hag’s side in the KNVB final.
Gakpo became the first Dutch player to make his international debut in European Championships since Martien Vreijsen in 1980.
