The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has reaffirmed its strong support for Senator Ali Ndume, commending his bold opposition to the proposed Tax Reform Bills, which have been widely criticized for potentially worsening the economic challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians.
During a courtesy visit to Senator Ndume, CNG’s National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, expressed the group’s unwavering commitment to supporting the senator’s efforts to resist the controversial bills. Charanchi highlighted that the visit was intended to exchange ideas on effective strategies to oppose the reforms at various levels.
He emphasized that CNG is actively engaging with citizens across Northern Nigeria through town hall meetings to raise awareness about the bills, empowering constituents to demand their representatives reject the proposals.
“We will continue to utilize all available democratic tools to ensure these bills, which threaten the livelihoods of millions, are rejected outright,” Charanchi stated.
The CNG also urged Northern lawmakers to prioritize their constituents’ interests and reject the bills, which it described as ill-timed and driven by external pressures, such as those from the World Bank.
The Coalition criticized some Northern legislators for abandoning their responsibilities, accusing them of prioritizing personal gains over public welfare. It warned that lawmakers who betray their constituents by supporting the bills would be treated as enemies of the people, whose political careers would be decisively opposed.
“We categorically warn any lawmaker from the North who supports these oppressive Tax Reform Bills: your betrayal will not go unnoticed. By supporting these reforms, you sign away the freedom of the very people who entrusted you with their mandate. CNG will lead campaigns against such betrayers to ensure they are completely removed from Northern Nigeria’s political landscape,” Charanchi declared.
The group stressed that Northern lawmakers must serve the interests of their constituents and not rubber-stamp policies dictated by external forces or ethnic agendas.
“Stand with the people, or face the consequences of their rejection,” he added.
The CNG described any lawmaker supporting the bills as a dangerous outcast deserving collective condemnation. It vowed to fiercely protect the region’s interests and dignity against any policies that could worsen the already struggling economy and increase burdens on Nigerians.
“Any senator from the region who supports these bills is betraying the trust of their people. We urge our lawmakers to critically assess the implications of these reforms and prioritize the interests of the common people over foreign influence or personal gains,” the group emphasized.
The CNG also called on members of the House of Representatives to ensure the bills are not only rejected but abandoned entirely. It reaffirmed its commitment to holding public officials accountable and ensuring that the voices of the people are heard.
The Coalition pledged to intensify its advocacy until the proposed bills are completely rejected or withdrawn.
In response, Senator Ndume praised the CNG for its proactive role as a vibrant political pressure group dedicated to protecting the interests of the people. He assured the delegation of his commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of his constituents in the National Assembly, vowing to act without fear or favor.
