Christian group asks Buhari to remove fuel subsidy, rejig economy before 2023 | Newspot

Federal Government must be courageous enough to save the nation from total collapse by removing fuel subsidy, Nigeria Christian Forum (NCF), a coalition of Protestant and Catholic faithful, has said.

NCF said there are strong indicators showing that if fuel subsidy, which it said costs about N250 billion monthly, is not removed, the economy would be devastated.

At a press conference in Abuja, NCF Chairman, Bishop John Matthew, flanked by other executives, said fuel subsidy is an evil that must be tackled headlong.

The Forum said the subsidy regime was a creation of the elite to swindle the economy. “For decades, one wonders why the Federal Government failed in turnaround maintenance of the refineries in Kaduna and Port Harcourt.

“If the refineries were working, there would be no need for the importation of fuel. It can be produced locally, which, of course, means there is no need for a fuel subsidy. So, we know where our challenges in the oil sector lie,” the Forum said.

The Forum further called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other private sector players to support Federal Government’s bid to remove the subsidy.

It urged the organised labour to shelve its planned protest and toe the path of dialogue.
