Kai Havertz joined up with his Germany team-mates for their training session on Tuesday after recovering from an illness.

The Chelsea attacking midfielder managed an hour of Germany’s World Cup qualifying win over Liechtenstein but subsequently picked up a ‘mild flu-like infection’ and missed the side’s defeat of Group J rivals Armenia.

Havertz’s lack of fitness would have been a concern for Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel, with the club back in Premier League action at home to Aston Villa in just four days time.

But Tuchel’s fears will have been eased as fellow countryman Havertz was pictured with the rest of Hansi Flick’s squad in full training ahead of their clash with Iceland.

Atalanta full-back Robin Gosens – who made four appearances for Germany at Euro 2020 – may also be involved in Reykjavik after returning from a foot injury.

Germany’s thumping 6-0 victory over Armenia saw them take a two-point lead at the top of their group as they strengthened their push for Qatar 2022.

The match was the first of Flick’s reign on home soil and the newly-appointed national team manager, formerly of Bayern Munich, said the atmosphere in Stuttgart gave him ‘goosebumps’.

‘We wanted to achieve two things tonight: to go top of the group while playing exciting football which is fun to watch,’ he said.

‘Quite simply, we achieved both of those.

‘I said before the game that I remember Stuttgart having a great atmosphere and that was again the case today.

‘The team’s great performance and the great noise created by the fans went hand in hand.

‘It was enough to give you goosebumps and we’ve not had that for a long time now.’
