Chelsea midfielder Jorginho insists he sees no harm in ‘dreaming big’ and believes he has every chance of winning the Ballon d’Or despite being named among illustrious company after the nominations were confirmed on Friday.

The former Napoli star struggled initially at Stamford Bridge but emerged as a central component of Thomas Tuchel’s side which improved rapidly during the second half of last season following the departure of Frank Lampard.

Jorginho subsequently played a key role in Chelsea’s surprise Champions League triumph and was at the heart of Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph.

Reacting to his nomination, the 29-year-old said: ‘Who doesn’t dream of that? Dreaming small and dreaming big are the same thing, so it’s better to dream big.’

Roberto Mancini, the Azzurri manager who has built his midfield engine room around Jorginho, believes the Brazilian-born star would be the fitting winner of an award that has been dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi over the last 15 years.

‘They are there because they are good, not because of me,” Mancini said at a press conference when asked who he would vote for.

‘Jorginho should, in my opinion, win the Ballon d’Or. He has won everything and deserves it a lot. It would seem strange to me otherwise.’

And those sentiments were echoed by Joringho’s club manager, who said: ‘He deserves it, he is one of those who deserve to win the Ballon d’Or.

‘He is a very intelligent player and it’s a pleasure to be his coach. The list of 30 candidates came out yesterday, but for me this list is not important as I do not judge them in that sense.

‘These awards don’t make much sense to me. Obviously, the players crave these awards, but it is impossible to make a real comparison between all these players.’
