Frank Lampard has explained why he dropped Marcos Alonso and Antonio Rudiger for Chelsea’s Premier League clash against Watford.

The Blues boss has made four changes to the team that suffered a disappointing 3-2 defeat at West Ham during the week, with Reece James and Kurt Zouma coming in for Alonso and Rudiger.

Tammy Abraham and the injured Mateo Kovacic also make way for Olivier Giroud and Mason Mount as Chelsea look to return to winning ways at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard defended his Chelsea defence after the likes of Gary Neville and Ashley Cole launched scathing attacks on Alonso and Rudiger but has still opted to make several changes for the visit of Watford.

Asked whether Chelsea’s changes for Watford are a direct response to the mistakes made against West Ham, Lampard told Sky Sports: ‘Not necessarily, it’s a mixture.

‘A lot of teams are making changes right now because clubs are playing games every three days and fitness can be an issue.

‘But we made some clear mistakes against West Ham. I’m not one to pick out individuals and that’s maybe a job for behind closed doors.

‘Collectively we need to accept what happened and collectively we need to put it right.’

Lampard added: ‘We’ve had the chance to close gaps and jump teams, but it’s a sign of where we are and we’ve got work to do to get to where we want to be.

‘It’s frustrating but it’s how you bounce back. We have to realise the position we’re in in terms of fighting for the Champions League places and move forward.’
