Ian Wright has hailed Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount as ‘absolutely magnificent’ and says he is the ‘outstanding’ young player at Stamford Bridge.

Mount has enjoyed a breakthrough season in west London, making 51 appearances and helping the Blues finish fourth in the Premier League and reach the FA Cup final.

The 21-year-old scored his eighth Chelsea goal of the season on Sunday as Lampard’s side beat Wolves 2-0 to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Mount first worked with Lampard while he was on loan at Championship club Derby County and has continued to flourish under the Chelsea manager over the past year.

Former Arsenal and England striker Wright told Match of the Day: ‘For me, Mason Mount has been the outstanding Chelsea youngster that’s kicked on.

‘[Christian] Pulisic has to get a mention as well, but what Mason Mount’s done from the start of the season to now has to be recognised.

‘I think he’s been absolutely magnificent for them.’

Speaking after Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Wolves – in which Mount scored a superb free-kick – Lampard said the youngster ‘will only get better’.

‘He will definitely get better because he is so young,’ the Blues boss said.

‘When a player comes in and plays in their breakthrough year and is consistently in the team people sometimes treat them as though they are older than they are. But he is still young.

‘You saw his technique from the free-kick. His is a special technique, and only top players can strike the ball that way.

‘His all-round game for the season has been brilliant. His work ethic and training daily is brilliant.

‘He has already contributed a great amount, but he will also get a lot better. This is just the start for Mason at Chelsea.’
