The fight for the final Champions League spots hangs in the balance, with Chelsea, Manchester United and Leicester all in the hunt on the final day of the season.

Champions Liverpool and Manchester City have already booked their returns to Europe’s premier competition, with two spots to be decided on Sunday.

Chelsea require just a point to secure a top-four finish but face a tricky final day encounter against Wolves, who will be keen to win to ensure they finish sixth above Tottenham Hotspur to guarantee qualification for the Europa League.

Their top-four rivals, United and Leicester, face off at the King Power Stadium on Sunday. Should United avoid defeat, they are guaranteed to be in next season’s Champions League.

If Leicester win, United will be reliant on Wolves beating Chelsea to guarantee a top-four finish.

However, Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson does not see that situation arising and he predicts that United will finish third ahead of Chelsea.

‘United don’t need a win to make the top four but I think they will get one – they are definitely playing Leicester at the right time,’ he told BBC Sport of United’s meeting with Leicester.

He added on Chelsea facing Wolves at Stamford Bridge: ‘This should be a good game.

‘Chelsea need a point to be sure of making the Champions League, while Wolves can guarantee sixth place and qualification for the Europa League if they win.

‘It’s Chelsea I fancy here – I don’t see Leicester getting anything out of Manchester United anyway, but Frank Lampard’s side will take care of their own business.’

At the other end of the table, Lawrenson predicts Aston Villa will survive, defeat expecting them to suffer defeat to West Ham on the final day.

‘West Ham are totally safe after Wednesday’s draw at Old Trafford, but I always felt they were a better team than their league position suggests,’ he added.

‘Villa have already shown they are up for a scrap but the Hammers are playing really well and are full of confidence.

‘The way I see it going, Dean Smith’s side will need other results to go their way to stay out of the bottom three – but Watford and Bournemouth will fall short so they will survive, maybe even on goal difference.’
