Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is baffled by Norwich City’s treatment of ‘unreal’ Billy Gilmour and says the Chelsea loanee will be ‘buzzing’ if Frank Lampard joins the club as manager.

Norwich, currently bottom of the Premier League, are searching for a new manager after sacking Daniel Farke following the club’s first victory of the season against Brentford on Saturday.

Lampard, who was axed by Chelsea at the start of 2021, has held talks with the Canaries and Wilshere reckons he should guide the club to safety this season.

The ex-Arsenal and England star has also said that Chelsea loanee Gilmour will be ‘buzzing’ to be reunited with his former manager, who gave him his senior debut at Stamford Bridge.

‘I’ll tell you one person who will be buzzing if [Lampard] goes Norwich – Billy Gilmour,’ Wilshere told talkSPORT.

‘He played him at Chelsea, he loves him. He’s going to help him develop as a player. I don’t know why [he’s been left out]. I think he’s unreal for his age.

‘He played in the Euros, he played for a big club like Chelsea in big games, and he can’t get in the Norwich team.’

On Lampard’s potential move to Norwich, Wilshere said: ‘Norwich is a good club. OK, they might be going down, but he’s obviously prepared to try and build something there.

‘He won’t be going into that job thinking, “We’ll be in the Championship next year”. He’s not that type of character. He’s a good manager as well. Look what he did at Derby.’

Asked whether he believes Lampard could keep Norwich City in the Premier League this season, Wilshere responded: ‘I think he can.’

Former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp also says Gilmour would benefit from Lampard’s arrival.

‘One boy who will be very, very happy will be Billy Gilmour,’ Redknapp told the talkSPORT Breakfast. ‘How he’s not playing there…

‘I saw the kid play when he first got in the Chelsea team, I saw him play in the Euros against England, you’d think if you take him at Norwich you’d have half built your team around him.

‘That’s what Frank will do if he goes there, I’m sure. I’m sure Billy Gilmour will be a massive part of his team.

‘It looks like they’ve got some good kids there at Norwich, and he’d give them a chance.’
